As Hatch Brenner Solicitors trainee solicitor, Bengi Karakus, comes to the end of her third seat with the Norwich law firm, she reflects on her experience of working within the Private Client department in the Theatre Street office.
Throughout my training contract with Hatch Brenner Solicitors, I have been engaged in ‘real’ legal work and provided with responsibility, and the opportunity, to develop my knowledge across teams including dispute resolution, personal injury and family law.
During the third seat of my training contract, I have assisted in the Private Client department. My responsibilities within the team have involved me drafting Single Wills, Mirror Wills, Wills for new parents wanting to ensure their assets are protected for their children and for the future. I drafted Wills for older generations wishing to leave their estate to family or charities and have also assisted in drafting Lasting Powers of Attorney and gained experience within Probate matters.
I have enjoyed my time in the department, in particular, the client-facing side of the work as I have taken instructions from clients during important moments in their lives, as well as the difficult times families no doubt face when dealing with the estate of a loved one following their passing.
As a department, we took part in the Will Aid scheme in November 2021 where we raised nearly £3,000 for the nine important charities Will Aid supports including Age UK, NSPCC, and British Red Cross. This involved us drafting Wills for clients under the scheme in exchange for them making a kind donation to Will Aid. This is the seventh year Hatch Brenner Solicitors has taken part in the scheme having raised nearly £30,000 in the time and I am thrilled to have helped achieve this.
I have enjoyed developing my legal knowledge and skills in the Private Client department and hope to continue this in the fourth and final seat before I qualify later this year.
