Small Sewerage Discharge: Two New Regulations Have Come Into Effect

In addition to the regulations that are now in place (there are 14 basic rules that apply to all small sewerage discharge, and there are also further rules 15 – 21 that apply to discharges that have occurred since January 2015), there are now two more rules that apply to any new discharge that occurs after October 2, 2023.

The rules in question are numbered 22 and 23, and they are as follows:

  1. For discharges to surface water or to the ground, any new discharge shall not use the same outlet as any other discharge if the aggregate volume of those discharges would exceed the volumetric general binding standards thresholds for groundwater or surface water. Similarly, for discharges to the ground, any new discharge should not use the same outlet as any other discharge.
  1. In the case of discharges to surface water or to the ground, a new discharge must not be made to a discharge point that is within fifty meters of any other exempt groundwater activity or water discharge activity.
